 Spanish dancer

As in the hand a sulphur-match burns white
before it flames, and giddily unfurls
its quivering tongues:—so, circling in the sight
of crowding watchers, hurried hot and bright
her rounded dance quivers in widening swirls.

And suddenly it is sheer flame aflare.

Tossing a glance the girl kindles her hair
and with more daring art whirls her attire
wholly, at once, into this furious fire,
from which her bare arms, each a startled snake,
stretch sinuously, rattling as they wake.

And then: as if the fire were strangling stuff
she gathers it together—flings it off
imperiously, with a prouder mien, her eyes
watch: there upon the ground, raging, it lies
and keeps on flaming and will not give place.—
Yet certain of her triumph, with a sweet
welcome now in her smile, she lifts her face
and stamps it out with little resolute feet.
