Invitation to the Waltz

from PACIFIC 1860

GIRLS :      This is the high-
Light of the year for us,
Dresses to the nines
Up to our chins,
Stars in the sky,
Moonlight is clear for us,
Candlelight shines
And the music begins.

MEN :         Social event
Reeking with quality,
Gentlemen bow,
Ladies advance,
We represent
Stately frivolity,
Youth’s at the prow
And so on with the dance.
When we say, ‘How good the floor is-
Providential
Circumstance,’

GIRLS :      We shall blush
And reply,
‘What a crush !
Really we’ll swoon
If they play one more tune !’

MEN :         ‘Music,’ we’ll say, ‘furthermore is
So essential
To romance !’

GIRLS :      What seems a terrible bore is
That you’d far rather talk than dance !
This is the high-
Light of the year for us.

MEN :         Gentlemen bow,
Ladies advance.

ALL :          Stars in the sky,
Moonlight is clear for us,
Youth’s at the prow
And so on with the dance.

MEN :         Ladies-dear ladies-beguiling and sweet-

GIRLS :      Gentlemen-gentlemen-please try to be discreet-

MEN :         Ladies-dear ladies-be kind to our-
Blind to our-
Fautls.
One waltz
Need not sweep you off our feet,
Though we may gasp at your beauty
Sense of duty
Will prevail.
We represent
To a large extent
The purely domestic male.
Strong emotions and desires
Training has taught us to check.

GIRLS :      What if you unbanked the fires ?

MEN :         God forbid. We’d get it in the neck !
Ladies-dear ladies-how charming you are.

GIRLS :      Gentlemen-gentlemen-don’t think us too bizarre,
Though we’re prepared to be kind to your-
Blind to your
Faults,
One waltz
Will not get us very far !
