Hippolytus the bad dancer

The standing stock-still that
Would be my dance for days
And weeks and months would have
Them saying first, “See how
He keeps his ankles still and
His arms at his beautiful sides
And even the fingers of his hands
Never tremble—see that”. Until
They got bored with the excellent stillness
And left saying,
“He’s dead or a statue or he
Has perfected slight movements
We cannot see”. Who would dare say,
“He just looked scared to me”?
Or, “I thought he looked ready
To dance just as we left. Badly,
But to dance”. “Who? And who
Would dare say, “I think that was
His dance, and he did it very well”?
